40 years ago: All Jayhawks gather for birthday celebration

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 28, 1972:

  • In Memorial Stadium during halftime of the Kansas-Iowa State game, Baby Jay celebrated her first birthday accompanied by the whole Jayhawk family. In addition to the cheering fans, three different Jayhawks joined in the celebration — the “1941 war-time Jayhawk, the duck-like 1923 Jayhawk, and the first Jayhawk from 1912.”
  • The Kansas Department of Agriculture census released this week listed Lawrence as the fifth largest state in Kansas with 42,130 residents. However, the 1970 federal census had counted 45,173 citizens, and officials were estimating that the figure had gone well past 48,000 by now. A difference in methods for counting KU and Haskell students as residents accounted for the discrepancy, as many students were excluded from the state figure while being included in the federal total.
