From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 22, 1972:

• Mr. and Mrs. Vic Melton, operators of the Charles Ise animal shelter, had been startled by the size of the animal brought in by dog catcher Ray Alumbaugh. Rather than the unusually large dog that they thought they spotted in Alumbaugh’s truck, the lost animal turned out to be a Shetland pony. The Meltons kept the animal overnight but said that they hoped its owner would soon appear to claim it. The pony had been caught in the High Chaparral area in southeast Lawrence.
• Lawrence and much of Kansas had experienced record low temperatures on a recent day. The Lawrence reading of 23 degrees on Oct. 19, the lowest since the statistical bureau of the weather service had been started in 1895, had broken the previous mark of 25 set in 1917. Records had also been broken in St. Louis, Omaha, Columbia, Kansas City, and Topeka.
