Vehicle rolls over man in street, causing critical injuries

October 19, 2012, 9:23 a.m. Updated October 19, 2012, 11:09 a.m.

Emergency crews responded early Friday morning to an incident in which a person had been run over by a vehicle, according to Lawrence Police spokeswoman Kim Murphree.

Murphree said officers responded about 1:20 a.m. to the intersection of North Seventh and Ash streets, where they found a man — identified as 22-year-old Ernest Davis — lying face down in the roadway.

The 21-year-old driver of a Dodge Stratus told police that he was driving westbound on Ash Street when he saw Davis lying in the road. The driver, however, was unable to stop in time and the car ran over Davis.

Davis was transported to Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka with critical injuries.

The incident is still under investigation, Murphree said.

Rolls over man? The headline made me think that the driver wrecked, then the car flipped over and rolled over a man standing there. I was like, "Holy cow, that's bad luck!" Getting run over is just as bad, I guess. I hope the victim is able to recover quickly!

Not bad lighting. I live at that intersection. There's actually a streetlight at that corner.

Shep, no reasn to assume substance for driver: you just don'texpect someone to be lying face down in the roadway.

I hope davis recovers. and yes bet alcohol/substance was involved.

It really is not an intersection at all. Seventh street dead-ends there and turns at about a 90* angle onto Ash St. So if the man, who is known to have passed out before due to insulin shock, was just around the corner, the driver would not have seen him until his headlights turned with the car. It could be other factors but it will come out in time. No need to guess at this point, and hoping for a complete recovery.
