Aquahawks openings: The Lawrence Aquahawks swimming team is always accepting new members. The Aquahawks are a year-round USA Swimming-sponsored competitive swim team. The Aquahawks offer a swim lesson program and competitive swim team for all ages. The Aquahawks are coached by professional coaches with weekly practices geared toward a variety of skill levels. Fast-pitch: A 12U fast-pitch softball team is looking for a first baseman and a utility player for the fall season. The team practices in the Lawrence area and has indoor facilities for winter. Contact coach Andrew at 785-840-7193.

Maple Leaf Run: The Maple Leaf Run will be held Oct. 20 at Baldwin City Golf Course. Cost of $20 includes shirt, 5K run and 1-mile walk and 1-mile kids run, trophies for kids run and medals for 5K. For flier, email Kit Harris at or go to, call with questions at 785-221-8025.

Thanksgiving day 5K run/walk: runLawrence will host the ninth-annual holiday run on Nov. 22 starting again from Woodlawn School. The Road Runners Club of America has designated the 5K as the state championship, with top runners getting special awards. But the run remains open to all runners and walkers. U11 baseball seeking: Competitive U11 baseball team looking for one dedicated player for 2013 Season. Cannot turn 12 before May 1, 2013. Team will play in several tournaments. Contact for tryout information.

Henrickson basketball clinic: The ninth annual Bonnie Henrickson Basketball Coaching Clinic will be held Oct. 21 at Allen Fieldhouse. Henrickson, Kansas University’s women’s basketball coach, and her staff will hold an on-court skill demonstration followed by a Rock Chalk Talk on defensive and offensive concepts. The free clinic runs from 2-5 p.m., but participants are invited to attend the Jayhawks’ team practice beforehand from noon-2 p.m. Those interested in attending must fill out the application form on, and return it by Oct. 14. Five Tool league: Teams interested in playing in the Five Tool Softball league for teams 16U and under during the 2013 summer should contact Steve Seratte at 760-1446. The league is looking primarily for tournament teams.

Turkey Trot: Lawrence Parks & Recreation Department is accepting registrations for the 37th-annual Turkey Trot 5K Run to be held Nov. 3 on the campus of Haskell Indian Nations University. Registration fee is $20, $25 the day of the race. Winners in each age division will receive a turkey, and the male and female overall winners will receive a turkey plus a $50 gift certificate from Jock’s Nitch Sporting Goods, 837 Mass. Hunter education course: A hunter-education course will be held 5:30-9:30 p.m. Nov. 2 at the Douglas County Fairgrounds building No. 21 and 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Nov. 10 at the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge near Lone Star. WOW Run: Body Boutique’s annual WOW Run 5K to benefit Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build will be at 8 a.m., Nov. 3. The race will start at Body Boutique and wind through the surrounding neighborhoods. The course is newly USATF Certified. The run is open to men, women and children. Cost is $23 ($28 on race day) for adults and $20 ($25 on race day) for kids 12 and under. Online registration can be found at
