• The Lawrence school board will hold its first two community input sessions this week to hear comments and suggestions about school building improvements that would be financed with new bonds.

This week’s meetings are scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, at Pinkney Elementary, 810 W. Sixth; and 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, at Kennedy Elementary, 1605 Davis Rd.

The district is planning to ask voters to approve what is being billed as “no-tax increase bonds” to finance building renovations, primarily at older elementary schools in central and east Lawrence, as well as technology upgrades throughout the district. The bond election would be held April 2.

The board has contracted with the design firm Gould Evans Associates and other consultants to gather information about ways to improve facilities to enhance student learning.

Additional community input sessions are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, at Cordley Elementary, 1837 Vt.; 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct 24, at Hillcrest Elementary, 1045 Hilltop Dr.; 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, at Cordley Elementary; and 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, at Sunset Hill Elementary, 901 Schwarz Road.

• Students from Liberty Memorial Central Middle School will soon be knocking on doors and soliciting donations for the school’s annual “Fun Run” event.

A kickoff assembly is scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday in the school auditorium. Students, staff and community members are invited to participate.

The event, a run of roughly two miles, will take place at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26.

The annual event is both a fundraiser for the school and a promotion for physical fitness. Principal Jeff Harkin says this year’s goal is to raise $20,000, all of which goes to support the school.

Lawrence superintendent Rick Doll will serve as the official starter for the event.
