25 years ago: Lawrence gets new police chief

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 16, 1987:

  • Ron Olin, assistant police chief since early 1980, today was named Lawrence police chief by City Manager Buford Watson. Olin, a 37-year-old Lawrence native who had been chosen from a field of 112 candidates, was to take over the department on Dec. 1. Richard Stanwix, who had served as chief for 18 years, had officially retired on June 19.
  • Rescuers in Midland, Texas, were working feverishly to rescue a toddler who had fallen into an abandoned well in her family’s back yard and was trapped more than 20 feet underground. Eighteen-month-old Jessica McClure had slipped into the well on the morning of Oct. 14. Today, an engineer had been able to look through a hole in the well shaft and reported that tiny Jessica was “able to move and looked she’s OK,” according to the local police chief. Workers had inserted industrial balloons below Jessica to keep her from slipping further down the well while they worked to reach her from the hole 12 inches above her.
