25 years ago: ‘Legendary statesman’ Alf Landon passes away at age 100

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 14, 1987:

Funeral preparations were nearly complete for legendary Kansas politician Alf Landon who had passed away this week just 33 days after having celebrated his 100th birthday. Landon’s body was to lie in state tomorrow in the second floor rotunda at the Kansas Statehouse, after which a private family burial service would be held in Mount Hope Cemetery in Topeka. U.S. Sen. Nancy Kassebaum, one of Landon’s two daughters, said that the family considered her father’s 100th birthday observance on Sept. 6, when President Reagan had visited him, as his public tribute. Landon, whose last public appearance had been on Sept. 19 when he was honored at a Kansas University football game, had died peacefully at 5:25 p.m. on Oct. 12.
