A remaining piece of World War II history in Lawrence had been destroyed by fire this week. The main building in the deserted prisoner of war camp just northeast of 11th Street and Haskell Avenue had burned to the ground in a blaze of unknown origin, leaving only the floors and foundation. Damage estimates had net yet been made, but fire officials said today that they knew of no injuries from the fire. “A rather singular part of Lawrence’s history is lost,” said Steve Jansen, director of the Elizabeth M. Watkins Community Museum. Constructed in 1945, the building had served as a barracks for German POWs brought to Lawrence to help with the potato harvest.
