The Lawrence High School debate squad brought home the sweepstakes trophy from the Piper Invitational tournament in Kansas City last weekend.

Sophomores Hayley Luna and Ellie Dunlap took first place with a 5-0 record and near-perfect speaker points, according to coach Jeff Plinsky. Individually, they earned the 1 and 2 rankings in four of their five rounds. Seniors Francis Berghout and London Koehn also went 5-0 in the tournament and finished second. Two other teams from LHS earned 3-2 records and finished in a tie for ninth place.

The Piper Invitational was an open division tournament, meaning it included participants at all skill levels. Plinsky said 15 schools sent teams to the tournament. This year’s resolution asks whether the United States federal government should substantially increase its investment in transportation infrastructure.

• Monday, Oct. 15, is College Night for Lawrence-area high school and transfer students. The Kansas Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (KACRAO) will host a college planning conference from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Free State High School commons. Prospective students can gather information about public and private colleges, universities and technical schools in Kansas and the region. Schools’ representatives will be available to answer questions about academic programs, financial aid, student life and athletics. The event is free and open to all area high school and transfer students and their families.

• Kansas University psychology professor Robert G. Harrington will lead a workshop about school-based bullying Monday, Oct. 15, at the Lawrence Public Library. The purpose of the workshop is to help parents understand what bullying is, how it develops, how it can be prevented and what interventions work best. Special emphasis will be placed on parents’ role, whether they have a student who is a victim of bullying, a bully or a bystander. Parents of K-12 students and school staff are invited to attend. The event is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
