Mobile phone apps launched for website

October 10, 2012

Fans of now have two new mobile phone apps to choose from to stay up-to-date on local news, sports and weather.

Officials with The World Company, the parent company of and the Journal-World, announced they have released both iPhone and Android mobile phone apps for the site.

“We really want to be audience first,” said Mark Potts, The World Company’s vice president of content. “That means reaching our audiences every way we can, not just in print, but also on the Web and now mobile so when you are out on your phone you can find out what is going on.”

The applications, which allow mobile phone users to access virtually all the new information posted on, are being offered free-of-charge to consumers. The iPhone app is available at Apple’s App Store, and the Android application is available at Google Play.

In addition to local news and sports, the applications also will provide up-to-date weather information through a partnership with Weather Underground, said Barry Smith, brand marketing manager for The World Company.

“We definitely understand people want information quickly and on-the-go,” Smith said.

The new apps are the first mobile applications offered for the site. They are in addition to an iPhone app released earlier this year for The World Company’s website.

Bill Fowle, director of digital operations for The World Company, said the app had been downloaded more than 12,000 times, and users of had begun asking for more mobile functions.

The new apps will allow users to access the latest headlines, sports, weather and entertainment news. Fowle also said the applications will provide a sampling of the more recent photos and videos from the site.

“As with most apps and technology, both our apps are evolving, and we welcome feedback on what users would like to see us build into future versions,” Fowle said.

I'm still undecided on the ap. Great for checking morning headlines unless there are confusing double posts like this AM? And kind of glad you can't do the comments on the ap. There are some of you all that I don't want to hear MORE of, especially with fat finger text-typing errors.

No wonder I couldn't find the app in the iTunes store. I was searching for the obvious Doesn't show up unless you search for Lawrence Journal World. Oops.

Worthless AP. Can't even read " Comments", the most important part of the news? Will continue using Firefox on Android for LJW, because at least I can still get the desktop version/format.

To Perses way above run it on Window / Mac even.

How do we find the app in the App Store?

This doesn't have anything to do with phone apps.

JW, please change whatever setting needs to be changed so that youtube videos linked in posts here don't automatically start playing upon the opening of the thread in which they reside.

Awesome! Now, zombies that are buried with their phones can log on as soon as they wake up... even from the grave!

Someone engage the horn!

Mr. Potts. Anyway you can put a bar code on your web site that people can use to do a direct download?

Are these apps for mobile phones only? or can they be used on other mobile devices (iPad, Android tablets)?
