A Union Pacific Railroad steam locomotive will pass through Lawrence on Saturday on its cross-country journey celebrating the railroad’s 150th anniversary.

Locomotive No. 844 will leave Topeka’s Great Overland Station at 10:45 a.m. Saturday on its way to Kansas City, Mo. Mark Davis, a spokesman for the company, said that the UP 150 Express will pass by the Union Pacific Depot, 402 N. Second St., about 11:30 a.m. It will not stop in Lawrence but will be available for viewing Saturday afternoon through Sunday at Union Station in Kansas City, Mo., 30 W. Pershing Road.

The train can be tracked through GPS updates at upsteam.com and at Twitter.com/UP_Steam.

For those who want to see it, I'd say be at the UP depot by 11:15 Saturday. The 844 is like greased lightning: SSSSSSSSSSssssssssssss....

Like Marion says SSSSssssss...

These were when engineers were real engineers, not computer jockeys who ride along to make sure the cord doesn't come disconnected.

Viewing the train from the depot is only convenient from a car parking perspective... The train comes around the bend and is gone in no time at all. Not only that, standing right near the tracks gives no vantage point to appreciate the train. The best place to see the train is from the levee by the Riverfront Park. You can see the smoke plume coming from far away and the train passes below you far enough away to allow for more to time to take it in.
