More home burglaries reported

October 8, 2012

The home burglaries in Lawrence continue.

Police responded to reports of several home burglaries over the weekend and Monday morning in Lawrence. Not all of the reports of the crimes are yet available, but Lawrence Police Sgt. Trent McKinley was able to provide details on the following cases:

• A resident in the 900 block of Alabama reported someone broke a rear sliding glass door and burglarized the home between Saturday night and Sunday morning while no one was home. A rock was used to break the glass door, and damage was estimated at $2,500. A laptop and numerous other items were reported stolen.

• A resident of an apartment in the 500 block of Eldridge Street reported that someone burglarized the apartment sometime between Thursday and Sunday morning when the resident was not home. Musical instruments, a plasma television and a computer were among the items reported taken. McKinley said he was not yet able to specify how the suspect entered the home.

The incidents are just the latest in a string of home burglaries in Lawrence since May. Despite the arrests of several people, the crimes have continued. While many of the earlier crimes involved suspects entering through unlocked doors, McKinley said police are beginning to see more cases where someone breaks a glass door to gain entrance.

why do i have the feeling all these burglaries are common place that weren't being made public knowledge until the police wanted a $40 million police station?

it reminds me of the late 1980's early 1990's....back then the public didn't know there was gang related crime in lawrence because gang related crime was being sugar coated to protect lawrence's image.

If you think there is "gang related crime" in Lawrence, then you've clearly never been to L.A., Houston, Baltimore, Chicago, or many other places where gang related crime actually exists.

I think he's saying unless you get mugged on your way to your car which has been stripped and is up on blocks in the driveway of your house which was burglarized overnight, then you just don't get to speak.

How many of these houses had a large breed dog inside raising hell?

Did you miss the report of the apartment break-in. It's also not too unlikely that the residence in the 900 block of Alabama is also a rental. Most landlords don't allow pets for obvious reasons.

Those of you who are renters and apartment dwellers, you can get alarm systems as can homeowners. There's one in town that starts with the letter "A" that can set up systems in apartments; I'm not sure if the others in town can as well, but you should check them out.

Why anyone with plasma TV, laptops, et cetera hasn't already checked this out is beyond me - those are two of the hottest items burglars look for.

Looks like Topeka is having the same problem.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Topeka is the problem, or at least a significant part of it.

And drugs... of both the illegal and prescription narcotic varieties.

One more reason to move to North Lawrence.

It’s Interesting to see than none of the 88 burglaries happened in North Lawrence. The map shows a direct correlation with home ownership and crime rates. If you know the names of most of the people on the block, you’re much less likely to have something like this happen. Lawrence has one of the lowest home owner rates in the state and with 1000+ apartment under construction it going to stay that way.

You bring up an interesting point. North Lawrence is separated from the rest of Lawrence by a river. It is well known that vampires cannot cross bodies of running water like rivers. These burglaries are happening at night, and North Lawrence has not been affected by them. Clearly, these burglaries are being committed by vampires. This is what happens when we embrace and romanticize vampires in things like Twilight.

The miscreants seem to feel entitled to the possessions of others.

That settles it then, the burglars are democrats...

If only I could electric the outside of my house during the night, I would sleep easy.

Before I leave the house, I give straight razors to the lemurs and tell them to defend their territory from interlopers.
