From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 8, 1912:

• “Woodrow Wilson will not be in Lawrence this evening. That is he will not stop here. Owing to the fact that the Santa Fe train which he had intended to take was an hour and a half late, Wilson’s car will be attached to a Rock Island and will pass through Lawrence over the Union Pacific this evening without stopping.”
• “[At the city council meeting last night] a petition signed by a large number of property owners asking that a municipal garbage system be established in Lawrence was referred to the committee on ways and means. In the petition it was stated that at present the garbage of the city was allowed to accumulate and that in many cases it had been found injurious to public health. Under the proposed system a regular collection of garbage would be made over the city.”
• “Basketball practices start this evening at Robinson Gymnasium under the direction of Coach W. O. Hamilton and Captain Charles Greenlees. In order to get the best results and develop the best material in school, Coach Hamilton thinks it advisable to start early and conduct two practices a week until the elements of the game have been mastered by the raw material and the signals well in hand by the entire squad. After the football season is over, actual practice will be held every night.”
• “The smoke stack on the power plant at K.U. has been repaired and can be put to use again. The job was completed by Frank Nixon, the Topeka steeple jack who has no fear for this sort of scary job. The stack measures 8 feet by 8 feet on the inside and 11 by 14 on the outside. In making the repairs Nixon reset over 600 bricks. The job was completed in four days.”
