40 years ago: Decrease in KU enrollment to have financial impact

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 5, 1972:

Final enrollment figures released this week showed that 272 fewer students were enrolled on the Lawrence campus of Kansas University than there had been the previous year. The Kansas Board of Regents was to be advised of the financial impact of the enrollment drop at an upcoming meeting. The university had failed to meet the projected enrollment for this fall, on which budget requests to the Kansas legislature were based. As a result of the drop, Chancellor Raymond Nichols had imposed a temporary hiring freeze for faculty and staff, and departmental budgets for supplies and expenses had been frozen at 90 percent of previously announced levels.
