Members of Kansas University’s 1947 football team had gathered this past weekend in Lawrence to recall some of the glory days of their past. “It’s been a very close-knit group,” said Otto Schnellbacher, Topeka, one of the captains for the ’47 team and organizer of the event. “We’ve stayed in contact very well with each other all through the years.” The 1947 team had won eight games that season, tied two, and lost two, and had gone on to play in the 1948 Orange Bowl. Since those year, team members had gotten together every five years. Attendees this weekend also included Ray Evans, Don Fambrough, Dick Gilman, Red Hogan, Cliff McDonald, and Lynn McNutt. One unique feature of the team was their average age during the ’47 season. Many of the players had had their college football career interrupted by service in the armed forces during World War II. “The average age of our ball club was between 24 and 26 years of age after the war because they were all veterans,” said Hoyt Baker. “And it was this way pretty much all across the country.”
