From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 3, 1972:

Following complaints from patients, Lawrence Memorial Hospital had changed its policy on releasing names of those admitted and dismissed from the facility. The decision had been made during a joint meeting of the LMH board and staff representatives on Sept. 20. Prior to the change, patients being admitted were asked to indicate if they did not want their names to be released to the news media. Under the new plan, the default was to not release the information, with patients able to “opt in” rather than “opt out.” According to an informal survey of Kansas newspapers, the custom of listing hospital admissions and dismissals was fairly standard at the time. However, LMH officials had decided to make the change after increasing complaints, including one from a patient whose home had been burglarized while he was in the hospital.
