Kansas University volleyball is ranked for the first time since the 2005 season.

The Jayhawks came in at No. 24 in the latest coaches poll, released on Monday afternoon. KU received the ranking after defeating No. 19 Iowa State last week. Kansas (14-2 overall, 2-0 Big 12) also debuted at No. 9 in the RPI, its highest mark in program history.

“I’m amazed at how many people have asked me (since beating ISU), ‘Do you think we’ll be ranked?'” coach Ray Bechard said. “To me, it doesn’t change our process, our preparation or how we’ll go about handling our business. From a fan perspective, I can see where there’s some fun in that. From a program perspective, it’s great. You just can’t afford to lose sight of the process. Our focus has to stay on one match at a time and what’s our next mission, otherwise we stub our toe and we can’t afford to do that.”

The Big 12 has three other teams ranked in the top 25: No. 9 Texas, No. 14 Kansas State and No. 22 Iowa State.

Freshman outside hitter Tiana Dockery, who had a career-high 15 digs with 14 kills against the Cyclones, was also named Big 12 Conference Rookie of the Week on Monday.

The Jayhawks travel to Morgantown, W.Va., on Wednesday for their first-ever meeting with new Big 12 member West Virginia.
