40 years ago: Registration push brings in 1,000 more potential voters

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 1, 1972:

  • The Lawrence area had experienced both its first fall frost and its coldest temperature in five months yesterday morning. Although the city didn’t experience a hard freeze, early risers had been obliged to scrape thin sheets of ice from their windshields. The chilly 37-degree morning temperatures had some people bringing in their more tender plants and beginning to mulch their rose and azalea beds, as well as perhaps planning to bring a jacket to the home football game this weekend at Memorial Stadium.
  • Voter registration efforts at three Lawrence supermarkets had caused an increase of another 1,000 potential voters in Douglas County. County Clerk Delbert Mathia said about 150 persons a day had registered at the three locations as well as at the clerk’s office, bringing the total county registration to 30,758.
