25 years ago: Lawrence man receives life sentence in firefighter’s death

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 1, 1987:

David P. Winebrenner, 22, had been sentenced this morning to life in prison following his conviction of first-degree murder in the 1986 death of a Lawrence firefighter. Winebrenner had pleaded no contest Jan. 8 to the first-degree murder charge in the death of firefighter Mark Blair, who had died on July 17, 1986, while fighting a fire that Winebrenner had allegedly started at his parents’ southwest Lawrence home. Lawrence Fire Chief Jim McSwain and several fire department officials had gathered in the courtroom to hear the sentencing this morning. Blair had been the first firefighter in the department’s history to die in the line of duty.
