Aquahawks openings: The Lawrence Aquahawks swimming team is always accepting new members. The Aquahawks are a year-round USA Swimming-sponsored competitive swim team. The Aquahawks offer a swim lesson program and competitive swim team for all ages. The Aquahawks are coached by professional coaches with weekly practices geared toward a variety of skill levels. FUNdamental Softball: Learn the proper mechanics and techniques to playing softball. Emphasis placed on fundamental instruction teaching the aspects of pitching, catching, fielding, base-running and hitting. Coach and team consulting available, too. Fast-pitch: A 12U fast-pitch softball team is looking for a first baseman and a utility player for the fall season. The team practices in the Lawrence area and has indoor facilities for winter. Contact coach Andrew at 785-840-7193.

Indoor baseball/softball practice facility: Big Springs Sports Center provides indoor batting cages and a large open turf area for team practices. For information, call 887-6700.

Holiday hoops clinic: Coach Bonnie Henrickson and the Kansas University women’s basketball team will be conducting its annual Holiday Hoops Clinic from noon-2 p.m. on Dec. 30 in Allen Fieldhouse. The clinic is open to girls and boys in kindergarten through eighth grade. The cost is $15 per child and $5 per participating adult. All children registered for the clinic will receive a voucher for three tickets to one of the upcoming KU women’s basketball games: Kansas State (Jan. 2), Baylor (Jan. 13) or Texas (Jan. 23). Check-in for the clinic will be at 11:45 a.m. on Dec. 30, in the north concourse of Allen Fieldhouse. To register, visit and print out a registration form.

Basketball, volleyball, dodgeball: Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department is taking team registration for winter adult basketball, volleyball and dodgeball. The registration deadline is Friday, Dec. 7, but register by Wednesday, Nov. 28 and receive a discount on the registration fee. For information, call 832-7920 or log on to the website at

Winter Baseball Academy: Free State and Lawrence high schools will be hosting their winter baseball academy again this year. Players grades K-8 will have the opportunity to work on defense, pitching, catching and hitting Sunday evenings at LHS and Free State. Dates are Jan. 13, 20 and 27 and Feb. 10, 17 and 24. LHS Girls Basketball Alumni Night: All former Lawrence High girls basketball players are invited to participate in Alumni Scrimmage Night taking at 6 p.m., Dec. 20 at the LHS main gym.
