From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 27, 1987:

  • The articles and ads were not yet referring to it as Black Friday, but today, the day after Thanksgiving in 1987, kicked off the first day of the Christmas shopping season, and the local Kmart store had opened its doors at 6:50 this morning to find 25 people already waiting in line. "We're just a madhouse in here," said Terry York, the store manager, adding that the store's 11 cash registers and 200 shopping carts had been in "constant use" all day. Kmart and Walmart were two of several stores in Lawrence whose owners had decided to open early on the day after Thanksgiving.
  • The season's first snow was expected to arrive in Lawrence later today, with up to 3 inches expected from a winter storm moving across the state. The snow wasn't expected to pile up, meteorologists said, because the ground was still warm and the air temperatures weren't expected to dip lower than the upper 20s.
