40 years ago: It all started with a can of sardines

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 25, 1972:

Seven persons had been booked into the Douglas County Jail on a recent night on kidnapping and grand theft charges. Lawrence police officers reported that they had been called to the Seven-11 store at 1741 Mass. at about 7:15 p.m. by the manager, who reported two men attempting to shoplift a can of sardines. The manager had followed the two into the parking lot and had attempted to restrain them from leaving in a half-ton flatbed truck containing five other persons. The two had jumped onto the truck, followed by the manager, and the truck had driven off and a scuffle ensued on board, during which the two shoplifters had taken a .38-caliber revolver away from the manager. After having been restrained on the truck by the two men, the manager had managed to jump from the vehicle near 17th and Kentucky, and police had stopped the vehicle a few minutes later, arresting all on board.
