25 years ago: KU football coach fired after two-year stint

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 23, 1987:

Kansas University athletic director Bob Frederick said today that it was “not so much about the individual as about the program” when asked about his decision to fire head football coach Bob Valesente. “It was simply a matter of not making enough progress on the football field, I think the world of Bob Valesente,” said Frederick. However, Anthony Redwood, chair of the KU Athletic Board, reportedly said that he would resign after an emergency meeting of the board. Redwood, a professor of business, said that the decision “reflects poorly on the integrity of the university.” Valesente, who had compiled a 4-17-1 record during his brief stint at KU, had read a prepared statement in which he said that he didn’t believe two years was long enough to build the program.
