40 years ago: Local man appeals decision on phone service to Vinland

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 22, 1972:

A notice of appeal to the Kansas Supreme Court was filed today concerning a decision to allow United Telephone Co. of Kansas to serve an area which had been being served by the Vinland Mutual Telephone Co. The case had been filed by Harold E. Anderson, Lawrence, who was appealing both the district court’s decision and an earlier decision by the Kansas Corporation Commission. After the KCC had ruled that the Vinland company was failing to provide satisfactory service, it had authorized United to serve the area; however, Anderson stated that he preferred service from Southwestern Bell Telephone Co., working out of its Lawrence office. The KCC had responded that United had applied to serve the area south of Lawrence but that Bell had not done so, and that the commission could not force a utility to provide service to an area.
