25 years ago: Trafficway hits federal funding snag

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 12, 1987:

  • The planned south Lawrence trafficway had run into a technical snag in Washington, D.C., according to an assistant to U.S. Sen. Bob Dole, R-Kan. Chris Bolton said today that Congress’s highway financing package that included funds for the trafficway had used the House description of the road, which was slightly incorrect. A technical amendment to correct that and other flaws in the highway bill was in the works, Bolton said. She added that she doubted that local opposition to the project would affect federal financing. “We think it is a worthwhile project, and we have supported it all along,” Bolton said.
  • Former Kansas University Chancellor Franklin D. Murphy had been chosen to represent KU on an honor roll recognizing the accomplishments of alumni of the nation’s leading public universities. Murphy and KU were to receive National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges medallions, and Murphy’s career was to be highlighted in a commemorative publication.
