Local boxer Shawn Hawk falls in WBO title fight

? Lawrence resident and professional boxer Shawn Hawk lost his challenge for the World Boxing Organization’s light-heavyweight title belt Saturday night at Staples Center.

Nathan Cleverly, the current light-heavyweight title holder out of Wales, took down Hawk in the eighth round by technical knockout.

Cleverly (25-0) battered Hawk (22-3-1) throughout the bout before dropping the challenger with a hard left hook at 1:53.

Hawk was added to the fight just five days earlier as a replacement for Cleverly’s original opponent, Ryan Coyne. Coyne backed out of the fight because of a contractual dispute with boxing promoter Don King.
