KU tennis 5-6 on first day of San Diego State Fall Classic

? The Kansas University tennis team struggled on Friday, losing five of its seven singles matches on the first day of the San Diego State Fall Classic.

Claire Dreyer, who defeated Washington’s Riko Shimizu, 7-6 (5), 6-4, and Victoria Khanevskaya, who took down San Diego State’s Dora Somoracz, 6-4, 6-4, were the only two Jayhawks to advance to the second round of their draws.

Dreyer and Khanevskaya also picked up victories in doubles play. Dreyer and partner Paulina Los defeated Arizona’s Susan McRann and Inge Hendrikx, 8-4, while Khanevskaya and Dylan Windom beat SDSU’s Michela Casanova and Kristin Buth, 8-5.

Khanevskaya also paired with Nastya Trubica to win, 8-1 against Washington’s Sarah Steele and Brianna Kemp.

Day Two of the three-day tournament begins at 11 a.m. today.
