From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 10, 1987:

A fire earlier this week had destroyed an abandoned Kansas University building that had been scheduled for demolition. Investigators suspected arson in the case of the blaze, but the case had brought to light a problem that had plagued KU for years. Campus fire hydrants did not supply enough water pressure to fight major fires along Jayhawk Boulevard and in other older areas of campus, according to Lawrence Fire Chief Jim McSwain. The issue had been acknowledged by university officials, who had already begun efforts to reduce the risk. A study completed the previous fall had recommended $1.7 million in improvements to KU’s water system, and the university was planning to ask the state legislature at its next session for $404,000 to fund the first phase of improvements.
