100 years ago: Singing voice wins lucrative job for former KU student

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 8, 1912:

  • “A true story, but one sounding much more like a tale invented in the fertile brain of Horatio Alger, Jr., is an account of the good fortune of Mr. Lawrence P. Smith of Kansas City, Kansas, who attended the University last year. Smith was a well known student, being a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity and the Glee Club. His singing, which was the cause of his good fortune, won him much praise here in Lawrence. Smith did not return to school this fall but continued on a job which he held in a bank in Bartlesville, Okla., during the summer vacation. Besides his duties in the bank, he has been singing in the Presbyterian Church on Sundays. One Sunday a few weeks ago, a millionaire oil producer from Pennsylvania, who has extensive interests in Oklahoma, chanced into the church and was charmed by Smith’s tenor voice. After the services the millionaire obtained Smith’s address and later called on him. As a result of the call, Mr. Smith accepted a proposition from the man of money to work in one of his banks in Pittsburgh at $150.00 per month and to sing in his church on Sundays at $25.00 per month. Smith is now in Kansas City for a few days’ visit with his parents on his way to Pittsburgh to take up his new duties.”
  • “Last evening in honor of Uncle ‘Jimmie’ Green as he is called by all the students, and who is dean of the law school, the laws gave their annual banquet at the Eldridge house. This is a large affair that is looked forward to by all law students and plans are made long before the time for it. Uncle ‘Jimmie’ or shall it be Judge James Green is so beloved by all the laws that ever year many old alumni come back for this event…. Music was furnished by the Law School Quartette and the menu was as follows: Oyster Cocktail, Celery, Olives, Assorted Nuts; Baked Fillet of Trout, Drawn Butter, Duchess Potatoes; Fried Spring Chicken a la Maryland, Sweet Potato Croquettes; Sweet Peas in Cases; Punch, Special Ice Cream, Assorted Cake; Coffee; Cigars.”
  • “Another dog said to have been infected with rabies was killed in North Lawrence this morning by officer Joe Daily. The dog killed a cat,a number of chickens and a goose and had a man on the run before the officer arrived and killed him. It is not believed that any other animals were bitten, however.”
