BELLE PLAINE — Authorities said a tanker truck veered off the Kansas Turnpike south of Wichita and crashed, causing a powerful explosion and killing both people onboard.
The Kansas Highway Patrol said a witness saw the truck hit a guardrail before losing control Saturday afternoon about a mile north of the Belle Plaine service area.
The Wichita Eagle reported that authorities said the male driver and female co-driver were from Oklahoma. They did not release the victims’ names.
Master Trooper Joel Powers said a motorist started toward the truck to help, but the truck was already burning and it was too late. He said the truck exploded about 10 minutes after he arrived.

for the headline writer..... I think it may be fairly construed that the tragic death of these two occurred in the wreck and fire, not in the subsequent "explosion."

Perhaps you didn't notice the "By Associated Press" noted at the top of the article.
What that means is that the article was not written by a local reporter, and that the copyright is held by AP. Thus, making changes to the article because "the events could possibly have been different" might be a violation of copyright law.

I got the drift of it as it was printed. The sorrow is in the loss of two lives.
