40 years ago: United Fund drive reaches goal

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 4, 1972:

  • The Lawrence United Fund drive had reached and surpassed its goal this week, just minutes before a report lunch for UF workers at the Campus Hideaway restaurant. Charles Haverty, chair of the campaign, had reported that he was only $266.30 short of the record $161,515 goal yesterday morning when Dana Leibengood, drive chair at Kansas University, had phoned him to report the transfer of about $300 in checks and pledges to the UF office.
  • A car reported as having been stolen was wrecked during a police pursuit the previous night. The driver of the vehicle, which had crashed about 9:30 p.m. south of Eudora, had fled the accident scene on foot, and according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department, he was believed to have stolen another vehicle from near the crash scene.
