40 years ago: Poll shows McGovern leading Nixon in Lawrence

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 1, 1972:

  • A poll conducted by Kansas University students revealed that Sen. George McGovern, the Democratic candidate for president, showed more strength in Lawrence than he did nationally, while President Nixon had less support in Lawrence than across the U.S. However, more Lawrence voters said they were undecided compared to voters across the nation. The sampling of local opinion had been conducted on the weekend of Oct. 6 by a group of honors students enrolled in “Introduction to International Politics” at KU.
  • According to a more informal morning poll, there had been more than the usual number of trick-or-treaters on the previous night in Lawrence and the surrounding area, but there were fewer reports of vandalism. Lawrence police had received a few complaints of eggs being thrown at houses or vehicles, and one officer had confiscated several dozen eggs from a group of young people, but no arrests had been made.
