Police respond to disturbance with weapons on Melrose Lane

Lawrence police Thursday evening were at an apartment building southwest of 23rd and Iowa streets responding to a report of a disturbance with a handgun.

Dispatchers said officers at 5:10 p.m. were in the 2400 block of Melrose Lane. Police were initially called after receiving a call about a man possibly threatening someone at the apartment complex, according to radio traffic.

A 53-year-old Leavenworth man was arrested near the scene a few hours later, Lawrence Police Sgt. Craig Shanks said. He is being held on suspicion of aggravated robbery, kidnapping and intimidation of a witness.

One woman was threatened and another witnessed part of the incident but no injuries were reported, Shanks said. No gun was found on the suspect, but police were continuing to investigate as of about 8 p.m. Thursday.
