25 years ago: Late spring storm surprises area residents with gale-force winds

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 28, 1987:

  • A fast-moving storm had passed through Lawrence on the previous afternoon, downing tree limbs and power lines. Rain, lightning, and gale-force winds had cut power to about 2,000 homes. The heavy rain had lasted only about 15 minutes, but the damage from the winds, estimated at 50 to 60 mph, had lingered. Some large trees in the older sections of town had suffered major damage.
  • The Lawrence school board had voted 6-0, with one abstention, to pursue a contract to lease, with the option to purchase, the former Sallie Mae building at 1919 Del. Sallie Mae had moved into a new building at Sixth and McDonald Drive earlier this year.
