From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 23, 1912:

• “Miss Harriet Brush, the daughter of Mrs. Olive Brush and a pupil of the eighth grade, is to be the Queen of the May at the Festival on Saturday afternoon at South Park. The little Queen will have her court and retinue and will occupy the seat of honor at the park surrounded by her attendants. Suitable costumes are to be worn and the whole should make a very pretty scene.”
• “The housewife can now choose from a pleasing variety of green things at the groceries and the prices are low enough to place them within reach. Gooseberries are among the latest additions to the market. They are selling at 15 cents a box. Strawberries have been on the market for some time at two boxes for 25 cents.”
• “Woodland Park will be the scene of a mammoth war maneuver on Decoration Day. Plans are now being perfected for the big ‘war’ which will form the special afternoon attraction on that day. For some time it was uncertain whether this would be on the Decoration Day program or not, but it has finally been agreed that the soldiers may have the day.”
• “The K.U. Seismograph recorded an earthquake at 9 o’clock last night which according to the indications was about 6,000 miles distant. The first waves began at 9 o’clock and continued for 31 minutes. F. W. Bruckmiller, who is in charge of the earthquake machine, stated this morning that he believed the quake was somewhere in Asia and that it was quite severe. The waves recorded by the machine indicated this.”
• “As a result of the dairy inspection made here yesterday and today four complaints have been filed with the county attorney charging four local dairymen with selling unwholesome milk in the city of Lawrence. The complaint is that in the sample taken from the wagon, dirt was found by the inspectors, which is a violation of the state pure milk law…. The inspectors report that in making their tests they found that all of the milk was up to the requirements of the law in regard to butterfat. The finding of dirt in the milk is the only cause of complaint.”
