Lawrence man, 27, gets probation in aggravated battery case

A Douglas County District Court judge sentenced on Monday a 27-year-old Lawrence man to serve two years probation after the man earlier pleaded no contest to one count of aggravated battery.

The man, Arvelle Martez Trotter, had initially been ordered to stand trial on one count of rape following a Dec. 10 incident where prosecutors alleged he assaulted a woman at their residence in north-central Lawrence.

Prosecutors alleged he committed the crime while the victim was “unconscious or physically powerless.”

Trotter pleaded to the lesser charge as part of a plea bargain in the case.

Judge Kay Huff followed sentencing guidelines in the case, and ordered the defendant not to use alcohol or illegal drugs while on probation, to submit to electronic monitoring if ordered to do so and to maintain full-time employment or student status while serving his probation.
