25 years ago: Threatened frog might escape, but bypass plans go on

May 19, 2012

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 19, 1987:

  • The proposed route of the South Lawrence Trafficway was probably going to be moved to avoid the habitat of a threatened frog, according to Douglas County Commissioner Nancy Hiebert. Officials were still trying to balance environmental and social concerns in their plans for the 14.3 mile road, which was then expected to cost about $38 million.
  • More than 70 percent of Douglas County employees responding to a recent survey said that they favored some sort of smoking restrictions in their office. About 68 percent of county employees responded to the survey that county commissioners had requested about a month earlier.
