Topeka ? Gov. Sam Brownback’s administration Thursday urged legislators to support the newest tax-cutting bill but conservatives said they liked the larger tax cut proposal that has already been approved.

State Rep. Owen Donohoe, R-Shawnee, said Brownback, a Republican, says he believes tax cuts spur economic growth, Brownback asked Republicans to push the larger tax cut to his desk, and that is exactly what House Republicans did.

“He asked us to do something and we did it. What’s the problem? Why doesn’t he sign it?,” Donohoe asked Brownback’s Secretary of Revenue Nick Jordan during a House GOP caucus meeting.

Jordan acknowledged the larger tax cut would produce budget problems as soon as next year even though Brownback had said he could make the bill work and that he was prepared to sign it into law.

But Brownback on Wednesday announced support of the new tax-cutting proposal, which would phase in the income and business tax cuts over a longer period of time.The measure could be up for possible votes as early as today.

Jordan also said that the Legislature could re-visit the issue next year with an eye toward speeding up the tax cuts.
