25 years ago: Class of ’37 marvels at changes at KU
From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 17, 1987:
Kansas University’s Class of 1937 was back in town this weekend to celebrate their 50th reunion. Not surprisingly, the visitors were finding KU to be bigger, more crowded, and more expensive than it was a half-century ago. “The old landmarks are still recognizable,” said one alumnus. “All these old trees, though, they were just planted” in 1937. West Campus was the biggest revelation to the 40 alums who took a bus tour through the area. “There was none of this here,” said a visitor with a sweeping motion of her arm. “It was a daisy field. There wasn’t anything out here but prairie. It was a good place to go nap.” Another alum commented on the students looking different: “They look awfully young.” Recalling the sports teams of 1937, one woman remarked, “They practically had to pay us to see football games. The team, oh it was bad. We went to see the band.”
