Topeka ? Advocates for victims of domestic violence on Monday urged legislators to approve $1 million for services, saying that assaults are increasing.

“Victims’ needs are more acute; their situations more lethal; and their lives much more complicated,” said the Kansas Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence.

Several legislators are pushing for $1 million in funding to help provide personal, medical and legal assistance to victims.

The coalition recently announced it was parting ways with the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services, saying that the state agency was putting new requirements into a contract that would be harmful to victims.

As a result of that controversy, several legislators are proposing an alternative funding source as a way to bypass those requirements.

That proposal is among numerous issues being worked on by a House-Senate budget committee.
