Funding for the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility to be built in Manhattan overcame one hurdle Wednesday as $75 million in construction funding was included in a proposed budget from within the House of Representatives.

The House Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security released its fiscal year 2013 Homeland Security Appropriations bill Wednesday, which included the $75 million for NBAF. It brings the federal funding commitment for NBAF to a total of $165 million.

U.S. Rep. Lynn Jenkins, R-Kan., voiced support for the bill in a media release, saying, “I am pleased that the House Appropriations Committee has once again recognized the dire need for NBAF in our efforts to fulfill this responsibility to the American people.”

Of course they would like to claim that none of this would be possible if Riley County moved to the 1st District. Only Lynn could have made this possible. I guess they think Tim Huelskamp would decline the money. We are stuck with the fact that the Republicans will do their utmost to put Topeka, Lawrence, or KCK in with the first district since we have so much more in common with the needs of western Kansas than Riley County does.
