40 years ago: Lawrence children and their bicycles take downtown

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 6, 1972:

  • Massachusetts Street today was simply a teeming mass of children with their decorated bikes as Lawrence’s annual Bicycle Safety Parade took place downtown. The children had decked out their rides with streamers, balloons, and flags and were also wearing signs, masks, and other props all on the theme of bicycle safety.
  • Dr. Benjamin Spock, renowned child care expert and People’s Party presidential candidate, was scheduled to speak at Kansas University’s Woodruff Auditorium next week. In addition to his fame as the author of the best-selling “Baby and Child Care,” he had become known for his stance against the Vietnam War.
