40 years ago: Local men receive award from KU Alumni Association

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 3, 1972:

  • Five distinguished alumni and two other outstanding individuals were to be awarded the Distinguished Service Citation by Kansas University and its Alumni Association. Two of the recipients were Lawrence residents — Arthur B. Weaver, former owner of Weaver’s Department Store, and John H. Nelson, retired dean of the KU Graduate School. The recipients were being recognized for their good citizenship, contributions to their community, state, and nation, and humanitarian services.
  • The most recent count of Douglas County voter registrations showed 23,696 registered voters in the county, with 20,400 of them in Lawrence. In the 18-to-21 age bracket, to whom the right to vote had been granted only a few years earlier, there were 3,915 registrations.
