25 years ago: Farmers’ Market opens 11th season

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 3, 1987:

  • Farmer-merchants and shoppers alike were to greet the coming weekend with joy as the Downtown Lawrence Association’s Farmers’ Market opened its 11th season. The open-air market was to open at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday in the parking lot of the 1000 block of Vermont Street. Beginning May 14, an additional Thursday afternoon market would be added. Green onions, leaf lettuce, and radishes were currently ready for harvest, with strawberries and peas due in about three weeks.
  • Twelve sculptures had been added to the downtown landscape in a program developed by the Lawrence Arts Commission. Artists had agreed to loan their works to the program for a period of one year. The sculptures had been formally introduced to the public on the previous weekend during a walking tour.
