40 years ago: Local men set out for California on horseback
From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 2, 1972:
- A front-page photo featured a few local residents setting out on an adventure. Chuck Kellogg, 1700 W. Fourth, was pictured with “Skip” Graves and Jon Green of Baldwin as they saddled up their steeds and prepared to journey to Sacramento, California, by horseback. The trip, which the riders expected to last about four months, would involve five horses (two for carrying supplies) and a German shepherd named Gypsy. The men were carrying some food, including grains, but were also bringing camping and fishing equipment as well as rifles and hand guns.
- The Kansas University Commencement Committee was offering a recommendation to Chancellor Laurence Chalmers that summer graduates of the KU Law School be permitted to participate “with hoods, but without diplomas” in the traditional May commencement ceremonies.
