Douglas County Commissioner Jim Flory is seeking a second four-year term in office.

Flory, a Republican who represents the 3rd District, filed paperwork on Wednesday to run in the Nov. 6 general election. He is the first candidate to enter the County Commission race. The deadline to file is June 1. The position comes with a $33,862 annual salary.

Democratic Commissioner Nancy Thellman, who represents the 2nd District, is also up for re-election this year.

Flory, who lives in rural Douglas County, is a retired attorney who served as Douglas County district attorney, an assistant Kansas attorney general, assistant U.S. attorney and U.S. Attorney for Kansas.

He was elected to the County Commission from a full field of candidates in 2008.

“I enjoy it, worked hard, and I think I have done a good job for my constituents,” Flory said about his decision to seek a second term. “And, there are things we haven’t accomplished that I want to be on the commission to accomplish.”

Flory said he wants to continue seeing success in expanding the bioscience industry in Douglas County and expects debate on how the county regulates an environmental section in the county’s land use plan. And, the county will continue to face fiscal challenges, he said.

“I’m sure how we spend our money in the next four years will be an issue that people want an answer to before we cast our ballots,” Flory said.
