40 years ago: Area Boy Scouts celebrate Arbor Day early

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 27, 1972:

Boy Scouts Jeff Underwood, Mitchell Taylor, John Grey, and Dave Blair were pictured planting pin oaks at Kennedy Elementary School. The Scouts, all from Troop 55, sponsored by the First Presbyterian Church in Lawrence, were planting the trees as part of their community service work.

Down in Lindsborg, Kansas, about 2,000 people recently had attended the Bethany Oratorio Society’s 234th performance of Handel’s “Messiah.” The 400-voice group was scheduled to perform Bach’s “Passion According to Matthew” on Good Friday, as it had every year since 1929.

The U.S. Supreme Court today upheld the ban on cigarette advertising on radio and television. The National Association of Broadcasters and six broadcasting companies had appealed the 1969 ban which had been put into effect on Jan. 2, 1971, saying that it restrained freedom of speech.
