25 years ago: Construction to begin on Quail Run school

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 26, 1987:

  • Roads in southwest Kansas were being reopened after a three-day blizzard. Snow there had begun to melt and had then re-frozen overnight, said a forecaster in Dodge City, where 11 inches had fallen. Meanwhile, work crews in the northwest part of the state were scrambling to clear highways and restore power. Lawrence was simply enjoying rain — nearly an inch and a half had fallen in just two days.
  • The Lawrence city commission had granted a temporary waiver from a city ordinance to allow construction to begin on Quail Run Elementary School. A road serving the site had not yet been built, but district officials said that work had to begin soon on the $3.4 million school in order to have it open in time for the 1988-89 school year.
