Royals lose Soria for season

March 24, 2012

— Kansas City Royals closer Joakim Soria will undergo reconstructive elbow surgery and will miss the season. The surgery is scheduled for April 3.

Soria made the decision Friday after being examined by Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala. for a third opinion. He already had been diagnosed with right elbow ligament damage by the Royals physicians and Dr. Lewis Yocum, who will perform the surgery in Los Angeles.

Wow. Huge bummer when we were finally looking forward to a competitive year.

No kidding it's a bummer. The Royals might be too far into spring training to acquire a closer via the trade route (without giving up a key offensive player in the bargain). A pitcher already on the roster or in their farm system will have to step up.

Losing Soria puts more pressure on their team offense, too.
