Two people arrested in connection with robbery reported at local motel

Lawrence police arrested two people Friday morning as suspects in a March 5 robbery at the Days Inn, 730 Iowa.

According to jail records, a 25-year-old Eudora man, Aaron Jacob Coates, and a 24-year-old rural Eudora woman, Melanie Spanky Faye Brooks, were arrested on aggravated robbery charges at 12:05 a.m. in the 2300 block of Iowa Street. Prosecutors filed formal charges later Friday.

A 32-year-old Lawrence man alleged he was robbed at knife point of about $1,500 in cash and other items early on March 5. The victim reported that several people participated in the robbery after they had been socializing at the motel, according to police. The victim suffered minor abrasions but declined medical treatment.

Brooks has been charged in several recent cases including a Feb. 23 incident in which she’s accused of shoplifting at Kohl’s Department Store, 3240 Iowa., and then calling in a bomb threat to emergency dispatchers at Walmart, 3300 Iowa, to try to evade arrest.

A judge Friday set bond at $70,000 each for Coates and Brooks in the robbery case. Brooks is scheduled to appear in court Thursday, and Coates has a court appearance Wednesday.
